a) What is the central idea of your concentration? (500 characters maximum/100-150 words).
b) How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. When referencing specific images, please indicate the image numbers. (1350 characters maximum) My central idea for my concentration is revolved around stress and deeper meanings behind the visual part of the piece. I decided to choose stress because during my first term of school nothing was going right and made me want to pull my hair out, and it felt like I had bad karma. I decided to incorporate that into my artwork to express my different levels of stress and each artwork showed that and how I felt inside. The work in my concentration demonstrates the exploration of my idea shown through imagery, and medium I wanted to be able to transfer the feeling of stress towards the audience. For example, my portrait that is fully embroidered looks simple. It’s a face that is sewn; and the deeper meaning that I wanted to present is every thread that I sewed represents a pain staking stressful moment that happened during the duration of a couple of months. Each piece represents the different levels of stress.

These are all in progress at the moment. The one on the bottom left is a drawing of a fist, and the image on the top right is an eye that will be made out of multiple materials.
Part A:
1.) Include a minimum of 2 pictures for each piece (clearly taken and cropped) (10 Marks) a.) At least one must be of your work, the other(s) can be of work that inspired you, etc., Part B: 2.) Answer the following writing prompts thoughtfully (30 Marks) 1.) Subject: what is/are your piece(s) of/about? Are you drawing from life or images/imaginatio My whole concentration piece is about stress. The first is the picture at the top. This is my brain, and what it felt like in the first term of school. I am drawing from imagination because realistically my brain would not look like that. For my second piece(the second photo) I decided to use a scratch board for my self portrait. Instead of using a normal canvas or piece of paper, I decided to do something different and unique. I wanted to do a self portrait to show and represent the expression of my face when in the middle of first term and how stressful it was. 2.) Inspiration: Have you come across any new inspiration since your first concentration piece? Did your first piece inspire you to take a new direction or improve/clarify on your overall concept? I have had no inspiration since my first concentration piece. Although my first piece did make me get more ideas of what I was going to do for my next concentration piece one after the other. The first piece made me realize that I want to explore more with lots of different mediums. 3.) Medium/Materials: What mediums/materials did you use (paper, acrylic paint, graphite etc,)? What were you successful with and what did you struggle with in using these materials? For the second concentration piece I used a few different mediums such as, salt(to create a more toned affect, washable marker and coffee stain. Although I have not completed my second two concentration pieces I did have trouble with the washable marker and the salt because it seems as though it all mushed together and distorted the look of the brain as it was before. When I work on it some more I will be adding for materials and fabrics to make it pop out more, and I will also not be using marker other wise it will mush it all together even more. For the second piece so far I have used scratch board. I have not had any problems yet. I will be using collage for half of the face, and for the other half I will be adding more detail to the scratch side of the face. 4.) Concept: How does each piece fit into the overall concept of your concentration? Has creating these images made your idea more clear or forced you to move in a new direction? The first picture piece at the top relates to my overall concentration because it represents how my brain was in first term, and the stress that was put on me. This shows how in a way I was suffocating in all of the tasks and assignments that I had to do. For my second picture above, it relates to the overall concept of my concentration idea because even though I have not completed this piece, I want it to show the stress and emotion through a facial expression that I was very stressed and tired. I want it to show the stress through my face with an audience just looking at it and saying that I looked stressed. Creating these images does obviously show a sign of stress and chaos. Through the time period of completing these concentration pieces I will be using different ways and forms of showing this concentration idea of 'stress'. I found this piece very interesting because at first when I looked at it, it had a very mesmorizing look, and I just wanted to stare at it all day. Although when I was explained of how it was made, and what it was made out of, I was amazed. This sewing per say is made out of acrylic paint and once I was told that, I wanted to go home, and try it myself. The time, effort, and committment that this artist had to complete this masterpiece is incredible. The colour skeem is very simple but at the same time is controlling to the eye. I really liked this piece because it was a different way of using paints.
For my long life drawing pose I chose to do a rough draft first, and then do a more detailed one, and then do the final one with the shading. Each contains a different element. Line, scale, and shading.
For my university challenge piece, I decided to pick the topic transform, because I wanted to represent what our world has become. Our world has changed, especially because of pollution, and that has caused deaths of innocent animals that have choked on garbage floating in the ocean. I have completed my university challenge although I would tweak it a little bit, just to make the fish in the middle pop out more. The successful side of my project would be that I put a lot of effort into it. I believe I really showed what transform can mean. I also believe that I have done a good job in transforming the fish from being lovely and beautiful to a mutated fish that has two heads. Before I started this project, I wanted to show a point in society, and make this piece mean something, and have a connection in society as well as the world. In order to improve, I think that I could have made the fish in the middle pop out more, to show that it is a fish rather then a fish blending in with the wave. I also could have blended the highlights and lowlights more together in the collage at the bottom of the first fish on the left that is attached to the fish on the right. I had a hard time trying to figure out what colours I wanted to use as well as what I would do in order to fill the blank spaces, but at the same time, not overcrowd the spaces.
My two concentration idea's revolve around stress generally. My first concentration idea is being able to concentrate on studying especially for Biology, because the subject is causing me a lot of stress, and a way to express that stress would to put it into my concentration piece. I plan on using ink, and watercolour for it, because I want to create a moving image that will show the agony, and stress that I am going through towards this one subject. Adding on to this idea, I wanted to create twelve pieces of levels from 1-12 in stress. I want to show the lowest point, and then I want to show the highest point in a stressful environment.
For my second concentration idea, I wanted to take the word concentration and define it, and then ask myself what I think of when, I think of the word concentration. I thought of concentrating, and not being distracted by anyone else, and really the best way to concentrate is to alienate myself from the rest of the outside world. To have a quiet environment, and be in my own little bubble of quietness, and have no distractions. I plan to use water colours as well, but also using graphite, and charcoal, and even ink. My backup concentration idea would be food, and exploring the healthy side of food, and the non healthy side of food. I chose this general theme because in these present days our world is becoming extremely unhealthy, and that is causing problems around the world, and they are trying to deal with it. I want to show different levels of food from what our world used to look like with food, and what it looks like now with food. What is the artist’s name?
The artist name is Rodney Graham. Where do they work? Rodney Graham works in Vancouver, BC. What medium do they mainly use? His medium of art is film, video art, Photography, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, and Installation Art. What are some similarities in the works you have chosen in regards to style? I choose these three images because they really caught my eye, and he takes a lot of photos of tree's specifically upside down. I didn't pick them to relate to each other, although I do fine that he is very interested in nature. Does the work follow a theme/idea? If so, what theme/idea is the artist exploring? The work that Rodney Graham does seems to follow the theme of nature, and he it seems as though he wants to capture these images in a different way rather then just taking a photo. By flipping the world upside down, to create curiosity. |
