How can relief sculptors use composition, line, and space to create tension in a story? How do they communicate who the “good guys” and “bad guys” are?
Relief sculptors can use composition, line and space to create tension in a story by using small spaces. Using geometric patterns and multiple lines can create a story through the complexity of it all. The composition creates a religious feeling, depending on what type of story is being told. Usually in architectural structures the way many illustrations are presented are in small, quiet and private spaces. Communicating who the "good guys" and "bad guys" is through specific sides, colours and emotions. Usually there are scenes on the wall, demonstrating for example, which side is heaven and which side is hell depicting the life that you would live in if you were to obey or not obey god.

1. COMPARING RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS:
Go to slide #'s 144-145 for the images to answer the following question and time yourself for no more than 30 minutes: Based on both the building image and plan, identify the religious tradition of each structure. Using specific architectural vocabulary, analyze the ways in which each structure’s design accommodates the needs of those who use it. The religious tradition of the image at the top of the screen shows a sacred monument that have very busy detail surround the centre which is a big wide open space that is shown to be a sacred area. There are arches around the big open space in the middle. There are geometric patterns, as well as unity. In the plan there is on the bottom a big open space and above that there is a pathway that leads to possibly a prayer hall where a statue of a god or goddess is so that people can pray. There are stairs on one side. There is a thick border on the outside of the plan showing that there are only a few ways to get in. Looking at the image on on the following slide (slide #145), there is a long nave along with columns on the side and a axel at the end to show a prayer section. The outside is very plain but on the inside are more intricate design meaning that its like a secret. 2. COMPARING AUDIENCE RESPONSES TO RELIGIOUS ART: Go to slide #219 for the images to answer the following question and time yourself for no more than 15 minutes: Although the narrative moment depicted in these two works is the same, the artists evoke very different responses from their viewers. Fully identify the first work. Analyze the similarities and differences in the ways each sculptor manipulated formal qualities and content to achieve his aims. The artwork on the left is Röttgen Pietà. Late medieval Europe. c. 1300-1325 C.E. Painted wood. The similarities between the two artworks is the figures are both in the same position with one figure sitting on a chair with their head down and another figure lying in their lap seeming to dye or already has died. The body movement flows. The differences between the two artwork is the sculpture on the left shows that these figures are in a state poverty shown by the clothes they are wearing and physical state they are in. The figure in the lap is very skinny to a point of death. The sculpture on the right shown by their clothing and physical body shape that they are wealthy. The sculpture on the left looks dirty which equals poverty, and the sculpture on the right is clean and marble equals wealth. Describe a journey you have taken or would like to take to a place that is especially meaningful to you. Why is it meaningful?
A journey that I have taken that is meaningful to me is when I went to Bermuda. I have been a few times in the past and the reason as to why it is so meaningful to me is because I had family there. They sadly passed away a few years ago. But I love it because for starters the natural beauty. It has stayed the same way for many years. The buildings are all the same. The colours are the same. The feeling is the same from when I was little. I would always go with my cousins. The sand and the ocean is the same. There have not been any transitions into big, tall skyscrapers and Starbucks or McDonalds. Describe the artistic intentions behind each of these artworks. How do the decisions of form and content for each artwork reflect the artistic function and/or concerns of the cultures in which they were created?
The artistic intentions behind the "Polykleitos Spear Bearer" is the sense of posture, and emotion shown through the stance of this sculpture. Instead of there being a straight standing figure that is in a very strict position that isn't real. Throughout time the postures and positions have gotten more real, relaxed and flexible. The other intention behind this work is that they are imposing what THE perfect body looks like. Never the less, what the perfect person looks like and what the absolute meaning of perfection is. The form and content for this piece that reflect the artistic function and/or concerns of the cultures in which they created, is the form shown that throughout the time period during ancient greek there were faces of the archaic smiles as well as the perfect body. Being made out of marble really shows that its permanent as well as a strong statement of what it is. Originally in Greek, they started off with straight poses and as I said before there was a change in their stance and as more years went by the positions got more emotional and more flexible, and for example, in "Athena Attacking The Giants", there are many bending poses that express the pain and agony that they were in. Throughout the time period there were more innovations of components that was made a very significant thing to the Greek time period. The artitisic intentions behind "Augustus of Primaporta", is that the artist wanted to show that through position and emotion this man shows even more how significant his authority was. He is wearing clothes, and not only that, he is wearing armour type clothing that have symbols and possibly stories told on it shown by the figures. Since he is wearing clothes, this could be a sign of power and authority because, he is more respected now that he has more clothes on. The decisions of form and content for each artwork reflect the artistic function and/or concerns of the cultures in which they were created was shown by his position. Instead of his arm resting down by his side, his arm is up, representing a fight or a fight that he participated in to show his braveness and accomplishments throughout his life. Etruscan and Roman art had a lot of decoration on their structures as well as statues. There sculptures and buildings had more sacredness then the greeks did, and they had more monuments. This statue of Augustus shows that there is a spirit beyond this statue and people in the future have/will look at it and think and wonder the differences that the Etruscans went through. Roman Architecture & Thematic Connections...
After viewing the videos explain how Roman architectural structures represent themes of:
2. Power and control of rulers? The Roman architectural structures represent themes of power and control of rulers by the carvings and statues that and stance of a hierarchy that represents who is at the top of the pyramids and who has the power, control, and authority, and how it was established by the drawings and stories told as well as the rituals. Assignment #1:How does the grade stele of Hegeso reflect both the cultural values and the formal artistic norms of the High Classical Period? During the High Classical Period there were many components and relationships between figures, sprites, and objects. Material and style was an important characteristic. The style of the sculpture shows how clothes were worn and how that took affect in style, and how in the High Classical Period women would wear big draped clothes to cover their bodies although sometimes showing the occasional slip of the shoulder. This sculpture represents the death of Hegesco and the Jewellery box relating to each other, and how his spirit is in that box. Their expression and emotions show slightly in the faces of the women looking down at the spirit of the jewelry box. This scene also shows wealth by the chair being present in the scene. This sadness shows the position and power that Hegesco was in. Harmony and balance. Assignment #2: Summative Assessment: Short Text-Based EssayYour textbook states: “Where earlier artists sought to codify a generalized artistic ideal, Hellenistic artists shifted focus to the individual and the specific. They turned increasingly away from the heroic to the everyday, from gods to mortals, from aloof serenity to individual emotion, and from decorous drama to emotional melodrama. Their works appeal to the senses through luscious or lustrous surface treatments and to our hearts as well as our intellects through expressive subjects and poses.” Making specific reference to the quotation and to any one of the works shown, analyze how the work reflects the Hellenistic period
"The Boxer" The Boxer reflects the Hellenistic Period because firstly of his positions because rather then standing up straight, he is sitting down with his hands rested on his legs while he is looking over at the something unknown. The expression on his face is very serious and seems sad. He has an old face and head, but his body is the young elite perfect body. His face shows defeat by showing that he is has a broken nose. Overall "The Boxer" has a few characteristics that represent the Hellenistic Period. The medium used for this sculpture, which is made out of bronze, and in other periods the statues are made out of marble. The artist who created the artworks above made specific decisions related to both form and content which reflect the intentions of the patron to show power and authority. Describe the form and content of each artwork. Then explain how these visual qualities elected a specific response from the viewers during the time period each artwork was created.
Picture one is made out of stone, and has two figures on the top. The figure on the right is sitting in a chair, and the figure on the left seems to be praying. This sculpture is a sacred statue. The visual qualities elicited a specific response from the viewers during the time period of each artwork created by having two figures on the top should that they are at the top of the hierarchy. The picture on the right shows two guards that are protecting what is further inside the hall. The sculptures are made out of stone, and have a slightly happy expression on their face. There is a mix between a human and animal in these sculptures/statues. The visual qualities elicited a specific response from the viewers during the time period of each artwork created by showed by the details on the facial expression as well as the age of the statue by the beard on the sculptures. The sculptures seem to be some sort of horse that shows a status of speed. Beside the sculptures there are engravings on the sides in the wall of more figures that are possibly praying towards the two main figures in the middle. What rites of passage are there in our society for girls moving from childhood into adulthood? For boys? What roles do adults play in this? How have those rites changed over the past century?
Rites of passage in our society for girls moving from childhood into adulthood is they are allowed to do things without consent when they hit a certain age. They are allowed to take on more responsibility. Boy's can take on more freedom and responsibility, and can be more mature. Adults play the role of teaching their children how to become a mature and proper young adult. They are responsible and in charge of making sure that their child is going to be on the right path as well as taking the right steps for their future. Those rites have changed over the century by allowing more freedom for the more present day. In the past women have had no freedom, and expect to do many things, like clean the house, and be the house mum. They aren't expected to have a future and do what they want. Men were expected to do all of the building and working. They were expected to work, and the women weren't. There was a schedule and structure. Women had to do certain things, and men had to do certain things. Imagine you are creating a visual autobiography. List ten of your most powerful memories. For each, list specific images you would use to make the memories concrete and visible for others.
